Car service checklist: what gets checked, what doesn't
A point-by-point service checklist so you know what you're paying for.
A full service should cover roughly 30 specific checks. Here’s the list — print it, take it to your garage, and ask them to confirm each one.
Under the bonnet (12 checks)
- Engine oil level and condition (drain, refill manufacturer-spec)
- Engine oil filter (replaced)
- Air filter (replaced or vacuumed clean)
- Coolant level and condition
- Brake fluid level and condition
- Power steering fluid (where fitted)
- Windscreen washer fluid topped up
- Battery terminals and load test
- Drive belt condition (no cracking or fraying)
- Vacuum pipes and induction hoses
- Engine bay for visible leaks
- Hood release and prop function
Underneath (8 checks)
- Front and rear suspension bushings
- Track-rod ends and ball joints
- Anti-roll bar links
- Brake hose integrity
- Exhaust system (joints, flexi, silencer)
- CV boots and drive shafts
- Sump and gearbox for leaks
- Subframe mounting
Wheels and brakes (6 checks)
- Brake pad and disc thickness (each wheel)
- Caliper slide pin operation
- Tyre tread depth (each wheel, inner and outer edge)
- Tyre pressure (manufacturer spec)
- Wheel-nut torque
- Spare tyre or repair kit
Cabin and electrical (4 checks)
- All lights (front, rear, indicators, hazards, plate, reverse)
- Wipers and washer jets
- Horn and seatbelts
- OBD-II for stored fault codes
Reset and report
After all 30 checks: service light reset, written report, stamped service book, VAT receipt.
