Car service checklist: what gets checked, what doesn't

A point-by-point service checklist so you know what you're paying for.

A full service should cover roughly 30 specific checks. Here’s the list — print it, take it to your garage, and ask them to confirm each one.

Under the bonnet (12 checks)

  1. Engine oil level and condition (drain, refill manufacturer-spec)
  2. Engine oil filter (replaced)
  3. Air filter (replaced or vacuumed clean)
  4. Coolant level and condition
  5. Brake fluid level and condition
  6. Power steering fluid (where fitted)
  7. Windscreen washer fluid topped up
  8. Battery terminals and load test
  9. Drive belt condition (no cracking or fraying)
  10. Vacuum pipes and induction hoses
  11. Engine bay for visible leaks
  12. Hood release and prop function

Underneath (8 checks)

  1. Front and rear suspension bushings
  2. Track-rod ends and ball joints
  3. Anti-roll bar links
  4. Brake hose integrity
  5. Exhaust system (joints, flexi, silencer)
  6. CV boots and drive shafts
  7. Sump and gearbox for leaks
  8. Subframe mounting

Wheels and brakes (6 checks)

  1. Brake pad and disc thickness (each wheel)
  2. Caliper slide pin operation
  3. Tyre tread depth (each wheel, inner and outer edge)
  4. Tyre pressure (manufacturer spec)
  5. Wheel-nut torque
  6. Spare tyre or repair kit

Cabin and electrical (4 checks)

  1. All lights (front, rear, indicators, hazards, plate, reverse)
  2. Wipers and washer jets
  3. Horn and seatbelts
  4. OBD-II for stored fault codes

Reset and report

After all 30 checks: service light reset, written report, stamped service book, VAT receipt.
